Does anyone have experience with making a volume that bolts in to a climbing wall? I made one that screws in, but if I could bolt it on I would be more inclined to change the location. Are there any special tricks to making a volume that bolts on securely?

  1. Bolted on volumes are very feasible. Check out http://www.motavationvolumes.com/ for some inspiration specifically the Doorstop and the Willy volumes. Here is a good photo of what they look like: http://www.motavationvolumes.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/product_full/doorstop%20no.jpg

Challenges with bolted-on volumes is size and strength. You will have to have the bolt run through a much stronger section then what a screw-on volume requires. So the underside reinforcement will have to be much bigger then anything I have shown on this site.

Also you get into the issue of bolt length and can be limited in the physical size of the volume due to the bolts not being long-enough. however the small volumes that motavation makes are becoming very popular probably due to the fact that they are more like a handhold then a volume.

Personally if you have a good electric screwdriver or impact driver, I find that resetting a volume does not take significantly more time then resetting a large hold.

Another option is to create your own mounting frame, here is an example: http://www.routesetter.com/2008/04/21/diy-wall-improvement-volumes/#more-157

Thanks. That was very helpful. I am probably going to stick with screwing in the volume. I’m doing this with my 10 year old and we have limited abilities. That said we made one volume (I did all the cutting and drilling) and had a good time doing it together and it looks great..
